  • It was founded as a cove in 1843 and became an important port for saltpeter shipments.
  • In 1871, it was named "Puerto Menor" by Bolivia.
  • With the treaty that put an end to the war in the Pacific, the territory of the Tocopilla commune was transferred to Chile.
  • The Tocopilla commune has a population of approximately 20,000 people.[1].
