Collection Description[edit | edit source]

Worldwide collection, but with a base in Essex County. The collection includes a rich maritime collection with plates of ships dating from ~1720, transatlantic ship logs, ship registers, ship images, customs records, and records of local mariners. The collection also includes county and local histories, published vital records to 1850, city directories, censuses, tax lists, maps, newspapers, manuscript letters, financial papers, diaries, sermons, church records, militias, hospitals, schools, and municipal governments. Essex County books, manuscripts, and government records such as probate records. 250,000 records have been digitized and are searchable through the library's website.[2]
