Populated Places[edit | edit source]
In 2003, Jefferson County and the City of Louisville consolidated their governments into one single entity with a chief executive.[6] Since the formation of the Louisville-Jefferson County Government (Louisville Metro), residents of cities in Jefferson county also became citizens of the newly expanded Metro. However, none of the incorporated places dissolved in the process. Therefore, several "cities within a city" exist today in Jefferson County.[7] For a complete list of populated places, including small neighborhoods and suburbs, visit Hometown Locator. William Croghan, native Virginian, settled in Louisville, Kentucky where he and his wife, Lucy Clark Croghan, built "Locust Grove" mansion. His brother-in-law, Geroge Rogers Clark, famously lived out his final years there. Recounts the story, through his first hand experiences in his diary, when three detachments of Virginia soldiers were dispatched in the last months of 1779 to proceed to South Carolina to aid in the defense of Charleston. A member of the 1st Virginia Regiment, Major William Croghan belonged to this group who were, on account of the rivers being so solidly frozen that ships could not move, obliged to march the 800 miles from the Jerseys to Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina’s Charleston Harbor. Major Croghan kept an itinerant diary which reveals the hardships, and pleasures, experienced by this group of more than 700 patriots. Extensive index. Lulu, FHL.FHL Book 975.5 B2vg v. 25 (1981)

Taxes were levied on free white males over 21 and slaves aged 21 to 60. These persons are referred to as "polls." Tax listings, or digests, of a county generally list the taxable landowners and other polls and the amount of tax. The records for each county are divided by militia district. Vital Records[edit | edit source]
Vital records consist of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. Although Kentucky enacted a statute in 1852-1862 requiring registration of births and deaths, many counties did not comply. A second law was written in 1874-1879, and 1892-1910 but, again, was not always followed. By 1911, the law was more clearly defined and kept by 1920. Any existing births 1852-1960 and death records 1852-1953 can be accessed online. See How to Find Kentucky Birth Records and How to Find Kentucky Death Records for links to indexes and images.
Original marriage records are held at the office of the Jefferson County Clerk, with divorce records 1849-1958 located with the Jefferson County Circuit Court. For more information see How to Find Kentucky Marriage Records. For Kentucky divorce records see the wiki page Kentucky Vital Records.
