Historical Facts[edit | edit source]
The county is named after War of 1812 hero Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) who became Seventh President of the United States in 1829.[2]
Parent County[edit | edit source]
- 1816--Jackson County was created 10 January 1816 from Randolph and Johnson Counties.
- County seat: Murphysboro (since 1 Aug 1843). Prior to that time the county seat was located a few miles to the west in Brownsville, which is no longer extant.[3] [4]
Description[edit | edit source]
The county was named for Andrew Jackson, who had just defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans. The county seat is Murphysboro and the county was organized on 1816.[5] The County is located in the Southwest part of the state.[6]

Vital records consist of birth, death, marriage and divorce records. Original birth and death certificates recorded until the year 1916 are kept by the Jackson County Clerk while those recorded after 1916 are kept by the Illinois Department of Public Health. with a copy to the County Clerk. Original marriage records are usually kept by the County Clerk from the establishment of the county to the present. Original divorce records are generally in the office of the Circuit Court Clerk.
