Discussion Items[edit | edit source]

From the Community[edit | edit source]

  • I have created Help Cases concerning the two items as requested last week. I believe these MUST be resolved before too long to avoid many upset people. I have had discussions with people at FamilySearch, but it seems stalled.
    1. FamilySearch is working on a script to change all links to the FHLC to use the {{FHL}} template. They need to decide on default text to display. Also, I believe the script needs to be modified (and I need to change the template) to allow this text to be overridden. Otherwise, I believe that MANY people will be upset that sentences will not make any sense and the text will be gone to correct them.
    2. Several thousand hard-coded links to labs, pilot, Record Search, and beta Historical Records exists. As the Record Search goes away, links will probably stop working. When Historical Records comes out of beta, more links will break. The {{RecordSearch}} template was created to take care of this. Another script needs to be created that would be very similar to the one created for the {{FHL}} template. If this is not done, we will eventually have thousands of broken links.
    • I bring the above subjects up in this meeting in order to hopefully get them unstalled. Others have asked about them in previous meetings and I have put them off indicating that I was hoping to hear back. Still nothing. With my new job, I will not be able to attend many meetings during the day. However, I am still planning on helping, but people may have to contact me instead of talk to me in a meeting. Crinkles about your new job and not be available quickly enough! Dsammy 04:02, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
We need to stay on top of those items above until all are changed before - get this, Dec 6th. Dsammy 04:02, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
I completely agree . . . hopefully the Help Cases and community will help get these done. Thomas_Lerman 04:31, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
  • This is something that can be dealt easily and quick. How many is too many? RAOGK templates as shown on Cattaraugus County, New York Genealogy is too many? I say one is sufficient, but 4 for each item? Dsammy 04:02, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
My feeling is that one should be sufficient, if that. Thomas_Lerman 04:31, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
They highlight four distinct services. I have already shrunk them, reworded them, but am willing to take additional requests. In accordance with Michael Ritchey's instructions last week, this might be an item more relevant to a content meeting, rather than a Wiki tech meeting. Murphynw 18:02, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

From FamilySearch Staff[edit | edit source]

  • Discussion on the problem of redundant pages. Redundant pages are inherently bad for the Wiki. For example, creating a page about county formation separate from the county page is confusing.
To stimulate this discussion I propose we delete (State Name) County Creation Dates and Parent Counties pages.

If you would like to contribute to a Wiki discussion of this topic (what to do about duplicate Wiki pages) please do so on the Talk:New York County Creation Dates and Parent Counties page. DiltsGD 15:26, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
I am concerned that placing dialogue about any/all redundant pages under once specific geography would bury it and limit participation (not to mention the fact that the dialogue will, in the end, have much less to do with New York counties than about how to navigate duplicate content issues). How about if we start a forum thread, and link to it from the NY County Creation page? That leaves room for dialogue about New York counties to take center stage on that talk page. Lise 14:19, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

There is now a forum thread "Avoiding Redundance."

  • Nathan Murphy's item removed. Sorry, I have a counter shift and cannot live my double-life as a Wiki bûcheron this week. Murphynw 22:07, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
