Bulgarian is the primary and official language and nearly all inhabitants speak it. Half of the Turkish population speaks Turkish as a native language, bu most also speak Bulgarian. [1]Bulgarian is a southern Slavic tongue and is written in the Cyrillic alphabet similar to the alphabet used in Russian. Minority groups speak their own languages. Records were kept in Bulgarian, Turkish, Greek, and Old Church Slavonic.[2]
