Directions to the Adamson Library: Map Description of Collections The Adamson Library is one of the premier independent genealogical libraries in the southeast. Our collection encompasses approximately 10,000 items of genealogical information for use on-site with books covering not only Augusta and surrounding areas but many other counties and states. We also maintain exclusive family files, loose papers, and special collections. Family Room - Our Family Room collection includes many published and unpublished family histories and genealogies. This room also houses Vertical Files containing family research papers, ancestral charts, Bible records, and Cemeteries records. Indices for many of our special collections are also available. Georgia Room - The Georgia Room contains extensive local and regional histories, church and cemetery records, organization records, and a wide variety of materials from Georgia and South Carolina as well as other southern states. East Coast Room - With extensive resources for Virginia and North Carolina, as well as the mid-Atlantic and New England, this area has a wealth of information on these researching their family history from the earliest colonial period. European and Military Room - This collection contains genealogical resources for Europe with sources for multiple immigration groups and migration trails. The room houses a collection of books on US military history. This is also where visitors will find educational, research, and methodology resources and a collection of maps and atlases. Special Collections - Some materials are available only by prior arrangement. Indices for these materials are available in the family room. C Timmons Birth Records for Richmond County, 1919-1926 Guardians Bonds, 1830-1896 Family Research Collections Augusta Genealogical Society Publications - Ancestoring – The Society’s numbered journal. Approximately 65,000 individual name entries from old records have appeared in 13 volumes through 1990 along with historical background articles, cemetery articles, cemetery inscriptions from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, Magnolia Cemetery, Cedar Grove Cemetery, courthouse records, naturalizations and more. Ancestoring Monograph Series (AMS) AGS has published some wonderful books in its Ancestoring Monograph Series (AMS): Quaker Records in Georgia , Wrightsborough 1772-1793, Friendsborough 1776-1777 - Containing minutes of the Quaker congregation which settled in (now) McDuffie County, near Augusta, in the late 1700′s. Research Roundtable - For those who cannot personally travel to the Adamson Library, AGS offers our Research Roundtable. Simple queries can be submitted in writing or by email to augustagensociety@comcast.net for this look-up service within the library. This service is free to AGS Members. For Non-Members the fee is $25/hour. Programs and Webinars - AGS regularly offers educational Programs and Webinars on genealogy and research topics. Many programs are free and others require a modest registration fee. Past programs and webinars are available to AGS Members in the AGS website. Annual Symposium - Each year AGS hosts our Annual Symposium, a full day event featuring nationally recognized experts in the field of genealogy and family history. History Forming a local genealogical society was first discussed at a casual meeting of avid genealogists and neighbors, Carrie Adamson and Harry C. Vaiden, III. After involving others, the first public meeting to discuss creating a local genealogical society was held on 7 July 1979 at the Richmond County Library (then on Greene Street). Start-up committees were organized and on 5 Sep 1979, seventy-two people attended the 1st official meeting of the Augusta Genealogical Society. AGS is an all-volunteer organization that includes members from a wide range of lineages who all share the passion of learning more about our ancestors. Today the Society maintains The Adamson Library, one of only a few independent Genealogical Libraries in the Southeast. The library's collections include many works covering not only Augusta and surrounding areas, but many other counties and states; multiple immigration groups and migration trails; and records from various time periods. We also maintain exclusive family files, loose papers, special collections. AGS also coordinates several projects to further genealogical research, many of which have been published. Tips for Your Visit The Adamson Library is currently open only by appointment. Email AGS at augustagensociety@comcast.net one week in advance to plan your visit. Visitors will assisted be a volunteer Librarian of the Day who will meet you for your specific request to use the library, please plan your visit for three hours or less in order to respect their time. A maximum of two library patrons will be allowed per appointment due to limited space and the need for social distancing. A fee of $10.00 will be charged for Non-Members.​ During the COVID-19 health crisis, all visitors MUST follow CDC GUIDELINES. You will be required to: wear a mask (No mask, No admittance) bring personal container of hand sanitizer maintain social distancing of 6 feet or more from others while using the library exhibit NO symptoms of illness Bring any genealogical information that you have for the relatives you want to research: full name; any birth, marriage, or death dates or places. Equipment Copies: Copy machine is available for visitors' use with a small charge for copies. Digital Copies: Scanned copies copies may be made to a USB flash drive free of charge.
