Local History resources. The Yonkers Riverfront Library maintains a Local History Room (closed stacks) with materials available for review in the library upon request. Also offered is the Riverfront Library Genealogy Club.
The local history resources at the Riverfront Library include books on Yonkers and Westchester history, maps, dissertations, high school yearbooks, Yonkers city directories, a clippings file, and the microfilmed back-file of various Yonkers newspapers. It should be noted that there are chronological gaps in these holdings, and also that most of these items, since they may not be borrowed, must be consulted on site in the library. Many of these items are stored in the Local History Room, which is located on the 3rd floor of the library. The library owns no vital records. Contact the Riverfront Reference desk for general local history information at 914-375-7966. For more specialized assistance, contact Local History Librarian John Favareau at 914-337-1500, ext. 486.
Genealogy Club. The Yonkers Riverfront Genealogy Club meets usually on the third Thursday morning of the month, in Tech Central, from 10 am until 12 noon. We use library resources for family history research and occasionally have a guest speaker or field trip. No registration necessary for our drop-in sessions, just stop by.
What should I bring to a Genealogy Club session?
Bring your login information (especially your passwords!) for your email address and any genealogy websites to which you belong. Bring any family history information you have, including names, birth dates, where people were born and/or lived.
History[edit | edit source]
The Yonkers Public Library was established in 1893 to serve the citizens of the City of Yonkers. In 1903 the “Carnegie” library was built with a $50,000 donation from Andrew Carnegie. There are currently three branches; the Riverfront Branch in downtown Yonkers, the Grinton I. Will Branch on Central Avenue and the Crestwood Branch in the Crestwood section of the city.
