  1. 8: Guiding Principles

The Wiki Is Free to All Users

All content on the Research Wiki is covered under a Creative Commons license, which states that anyone can use this content, with proper citations (Attribution), under the same or similar license (Share Alike)[edit | edit source]

Look for $ indicating that site charges money. (THIS GIVES THE USER A CLEAR CHOICE WHETHER TO PAY OR NOT)

  • This chart gives links to some Utah online databases for these records:

Also, see How to Find Utah Birth Records.

Sources and Delimiters[edit | edit source]

Articles should cite authoritative, verifiable sources whenever possible. Any unsourced material may be challenged and removed.

LINK - DON'T COPY[edit | edit source]

No source documents should be included except a few pages used as examples.

The purpose of the Wiki is to teach people where the records they can use are located and how to access them.

Neutral Point of View[edit | edit source]

The Wiki must be unbiased and strictly factual--no discussions of religion, politics, ethnicity and culture.

Spam-Free[edit | edit source]

Sources should be recommended in the order that the user might want to use them, taking into consideration budgets, time constraints, and speed of response desired.

Etiquette Guidelines[edit | edit source]

  • Use etiquette.
  • Assume good faith.
  • Be civilized in discussions.
====Three-revert rule. Do not revert any page or any part of a page more than 3 times in 24 hours. Doing so may lead to action being taken against your account by an administrator.====

Do not use profanity or profane slang in any form or language.[edit | edit source]

Be Bold with caution[edit | edit source]

  1. 11 Manual of Style

*The FamilySearch Wiki has a prescribed Manual of Style that should be employed in formatting and writing the articles. Wiki Support Missionaries should be familiar with it for patrolling changes and adding content.[edit | edit source]

* There are general principles of grammar and writing style designated for the Wiki.[edit | edit source]

*Naming - how articles should be named and how they are written.[edit | edit source]

*Diacritics and quotation marks[edit | edit source]

In article titles, you may use words with diacritics (symbols used in other languages) or letters that do not appear in the English alphabet. However, the search engine may not display the article if users search for the English version of the word. Quotation marks should be avoided in article titles.

  • Spelling variations of English. Variations of English are acceptable. For example, either colour (British) or color (United States) is acceptable. Each article should use only one variation of English. When editing, use the variation of English already established in the article.

  • Regarding one area of Grammer Style: "Ampersand (&): Do not replace the word “and” with an ampersand (&)."
