Template:FHL Search Tip/doc

From FamilySearch Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Purpose[edit source]

This template can be added to articles about FamilySearch Historical Record Collections available to search or browse. The intent is to provide users with more online and offline (microfilm, books, etc. not yet published online) collections and reference materials available through the FamilySearch Catalog. The tip also provides a link to the wiki page for the locality's "Archives and Libraries" (if any).

Parameters & Usage[edit source]

This template produces links to the Place and Keywords search results in the FS Catalog for the locality/-ies covered by the collection. In order to search successfully in the FS Catalog for the Place search, one has to include the complete locality hierarchy; that is, to get results for Vinchiaturo, the FS Catalog has to search Italy, Campobasso, Vinchiaturo to include the province.

Note: Diacritics must be included in the locality names in order for this template to perform an accurate search of the locality in the FS Catalog. In order for the template to produce the link containing the correct search results for the locality, the lines of code must designate those specific localities in proper order according to the locality hierarchy.

|noarchiveslink
If the locality does not have a wiki page containing contact and/or other information about the locality's resident archives and/or libraries, then this line needs to be added. If the locality does not have a wiki page about its archives and libraries, and this line isn't added, then the link will show up in red (nonexistent wiki page). You may also include this line if you do not want the link to the archives and libraries wiki page to show.
|foreignone=
These signify that the collection is a country-wide collection for a locality that is not in the United States or Canada. This line means that the template will have one level of locality hierarchy: the country.

Don't overlook FHL Place Italy items or FHL Keyword Italy items in the FamilySearch Library Catalog. For other libraries (local and national) or to gain access to items of interest, see Italy Archives and Libraries.
|USone=
This is used for collections from a state in the United States. 'United States' is automatically included in the link and search when you use this designation. This line means that the template will have one level of locality hierarchy: the state.
Note
FSHR articles for country-wide US collections do not use the FHL Search Tip template because the Catalog searches would produce more results than most users would care to go through.

This is only used for those collections pertaining to Canada's provinces (not country-wide Canada collections); for country-wide Canada collections, use "foreignone." This line means that the template will have one level of locality hierarchy: the province.
Example

|foreigntwo=
This is used for collections pertaining to a state, department, or province of a locality outside the United States. This line means that the template will have two levels of locality hierarchy: the country and state/department/province.
