  • Just an FYI - Microsoft Office 2010 will have a free web-based version of most of the suite - including the ability to deliver a powerpoint presentation over the internet. Saw it in this news article. Laralee 16:48, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Traces is now available for download in the App Store through iTunes. Traces brings the hundreds of millions of historical records available through FamilySearch to your iPhone or iPod touch. Search by name, event, place, date range, or family members. Examine record details and even view the original document images right in the palm of your hand. Share records you find with family and friends or add them to your personal Folder for later viewing or additional research. Traces is the perfect app for the on-the-go researcher or even for the causal user who is just interested in finding traces of his or her past.
  • Others are available for the iPhone that accesses new FamilySearch, etc. such as MobileTree. I am not so sure that we really want to advertise every bit of software for the PC, iPhone, etc. Actually, does this not go against policies? Thomas_Lerman 15:00, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

QR Code[edit | edit source]

  • Submitted a QR code image for review 20 April 2010, look for file Media:QRCode.png to find it once it is. Insert it here, (relates to 20 April discussion).
  • This image could be added to the pass-along card or other handouts because it's basically used on printed material.
  • We obviously still need the url because everyone doesn't have a smart phone.

True, but this would be a way for people who have one to get the URL to their smartphones, so it is important to include the URL along with the code, and those who could scan the code with their phones would be able to more quickly access the wiki by way of the QR code. This is but one additional option in promoting the wiki. JamesAnderson

I believe it was brought up in the meeting about Blackberry working too. Anyway, several phones work. Since this is on printed material only, this is quite a low priority item, but should not take much time for discussion or inclusion on printed material. Thomas_Lerman 14:55, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Trouble with Record Search URLs[edit | edit source]

  • We need to fix 3,000+ links to Record Search content from within articles in the wiki.
  • There are several parts to this problem: Fix current links by using the template that was created for creating links from article pages to Record Search (Template:RecordSearch). Training and help articles need to be referred to when editing articles to add the template. Helping others learn about using the template will help prevent the inaccurate links from being added to the wiki articles. Training issue related to using the template for Record Search articles rather than creating an external link.
  • Is there a way to flag pages that are part of projects to alert would-be editors that they should check w/ the project folks before making any significant changes? Good question for this project as well as many other wiki projects. Does anyone have an answer?

Table Template[edit | edit source]

Category:Articles using the table template incorrectly

This category is automatically added to pages that have incorrectly used the {{Table}} template. Currently this category has three pages in the wiki with this category. Instructions related to why the category was created, how the category should be used, and how the category will be managed should be added to the page. I think this category page also needs to be categorized itself, but I'm not positive because it is associated with a template. The template and category are both part of the overall maintenance process in the wiki and should be documented within the maintenance documentation. Should a template also be used for this? Don't know the answer to that because of it's association with a template to begin with. When this category page is discovered, the user has no way to know that it's associated with a template and that's why the documentation is critical and should be added to this page ASAP.

Also, I think it would be good to have a demo on the correct usage of the "Table" template. Everyone appreciates a better and easier way to do things in the wiki! Thanks! --Fran 15:29, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

The ISBN Feature[edit | edit source]

  • It appears the ISBN search feature might be working properly, at least in part. If anyone would like to help verify the feature is functioning as expected, that would be nice. Pages you might want to refer to while testing this feature include:
  • FamilySearch Wiki:Book sources
  • Template:WorldCat - how does this template affect the ISBN search feature that is default in MediaWiki?
  • Russia Periodicals has several ISBN links on the page. Clicking on any of the links takes you to the "Book sources" page but includes the ISBN search field with the word "Go" to conduct a search. Unfortunately when I click on "Go" nothing happens. In order to conduct a search I have to scroll down to the list of book sources and click on each option of interest to me. Example: "Find this book at WorldCat free online catalog of the world's libraries"
  • The MediaWiki page about the ISBN feature helps to understand the intended functionality of this feature.
As I recall, the automatic ISBN feature (if we are talking about the same thing) had some issues that rendered it broken. Unfortunately, I do not remember the details off hand. The {{WorldCat}} template was then intended to be a replacement. The move seems to be to use templates as much as possible instead of Interwiki links and other automatic features. As I said I would, I have checked into the problem that I knew about. Please see the Forum thread concerning this topic. It looks like the Mediawiki code may have been updated and it works now. I would like this verified if possible. Thomas_Lerman 16:33, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Dispute Resolution Process Proposal[edit | edit source]

Proposal to rename the Dispute Resolution Process

We're in the process of updating the content related to the governance and dispute resolution process in the wiki. One concern voiced in the recent past was related to the title of "Dispute Resolution." The concern is that the title itself has a negative overtone and we were looking for ideas to communicate something more positive. One suggestion that was shared with me is "Agreement Process." I really like the suggestion and welcome your opinion on this and other ideas. The pages in the wiki that would be impacted by this change include:

The title is already a coined phrase that is widely understood.
The word dispute is somewhat negative, but don't know what else could be used.
It is kinda negative, but newFamilySearch uses it.
Frosting. There are much bigger problems to address. Too many changes would have to be made.
Understands the issue, but considers this to be a low priority.
Wikipedia uses Dispute Resolution and also their conduct policies which include consensus
Okay, either way.
No objections to keeping it as-is.
