Taiwan (台湾) , officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), is an island country in East Asia. It covers an area of 36,197 km2(13,976 sq mi). Its capital is Taipei (台北). Austronesian-speaking ancestors of indigenous people settled in Taiwan around 6,000 years ago. During the 17th century, a large scale of Han Chinese immigrated to this island. [1]
