The County was named for the historic Winnebago people, a federally recognized Native American tribe now known as the Ho-Chunk Nation. Chief Oshkosh was a leader in the area. The County has Oshkosh, Wisconsin as its seat and the County was created 1848. The County is located in the central east area of the state.
