The 6th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry (Union) was organized at large February 27 to April 23, 1862. District of Southwest Missouri, Dept. of Missouri, to July, 1865.<ref name="cwss">National Park Service, [https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/soldiers-and-sailors-database.htm The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System] (accessed 4 January 2011).</ref>
Another source gives the following. The 6th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry was enrolled between 23 December 1861 and 29 March 1862. They were mustered in between 18 January 1862 and 22 April 1862. The Regiment was discharged between 26 February 1865 and July 18 1865. The Colonel in charge was Edwin C.
