  • Before the conquest, Petén had a considerable population, made up of different Mayan peoples, particularly around the central lakes and along the rivers. Petén was divided into different Maya manors involved in a complex network of alliances and enmities. The most important groups around the central lakes were the itza, yalain and couohes.
  • Sayaxché was started as a logging camp, and later it became a village in the municipality of La Libertad.
  • He was granted the category of municipality on December 30, 1929.
  • The municipality of Sayaxché has a population of approximately 60,000 people[1]
