  • San Luis was founded in 1708, after the violent conquest of Petén in 1697, when the mopans agreed to unify in a single location.
  • It was created as a municipality in about 1832.
  • On April 30, 1859, in order to compensate Great Britain for the weapons granted to expel from Nicaragua the American filibuster William Walker, the government of General Rafael Carrera -through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pedro de Aycinena- celebrated the treated Wyke-Aycinena with the United Kingdom.
  • The municipality of San Luis has a population of approximately 60,000 people[1]
