Queensland family history societies
There are many family history societies in Queensland. Most major towns will have a society.
Although family history societies in Queensland are mostly independent organisations, nonetheless most societies operate in a fairly similar way.
Most family history societies have a library, where they hold their collection of books, microfiche, microfilms and CD-ROMs. There will usually be the necessary equipment (microfiche readers, computers, etc) to use these resources. Typically they hold the major Australian resources (e.g. indexes to births, deaths and marriages) and a good collection of local resources. They also hold some overseas resources, typically reflecting areas of interest to the majority of their memberships. That means most Queensland societies will have some resources for the United Kingdom and Ireland, while coverage of other countries will be quite patchy.
Most family history societies compile information on their local area, which is usually available for consultation in their library or is for sale as books, microfiche or CD-ROMs.
Family history societies usually produce a magazine or newsletter, run seminars, and have a WWW site. Generally their WWW sites provide information about membership, library opening hours and resources for sale. As most family history societies sell their locally-produced resources, they rarely make them available online.
Most family history societies have an annual membership fee that usually provides unlimited access to the society's library, plus a daily rate for people wishing to make only occasional visits to their library.
