Penang is located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It has two parts: Penang Island, and Seberang Perai on the mainland. They are connected by two bridges, the Penang Bridge and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge. It's capitol city is Georgetown, which is located on Penang Island. Georgetown is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Penang has a total land area of 1,048 km2 (405 sq mi).

The name Penang, comes from the modern Malay word Pulau Pinang, meaning The Island of the Areca Nut Palm. The island of Penang is also known as the Pearl of the Orient.

The head of state is the Governor (Malay: Yang di-Pertua Negeri), who is appointed by the King of Malaysia (Malay: Yang di-Pertuan Agong). The Penang State Executive Council is the executive authority of the Penang state government, led by its Chief Minister. Major languages spoken in Penang are Malay, Englisg, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Mandarin, and Tamil. But it is particularly well known for the Hokkien dialect, known as Penang Hokkien. [1]
