  • Originally the province was part of the territory traditionally known as Chiloé Continental, belonged to the old Department of Chaitén.
  • The province was formed in 1976.
  • The provincial capital has been the town of Chaitén since its formation, except for the years 2008 to 2010 when it first moved to the town of Palena and then to the commune of Futaleufú because of a volcanic eruption.
