Northampton County is on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. It was named for Northamptonshire, England[1].

In 1790, Northampton County had one of the largest free colored populations in the state (464 persons).[6]

10,000 name petition (dated: 16 October 1776) signed by Baptists and Baptist sympathizers from all over Virginia, asking for an end to persecution of Baptists by the established church.
