The modern city on the Mediterranean coast of southeastern France is the capital of Alpes-Maritimes department. It was founded in the 4th century before the modern era as an Ionian Greek colony and was a Romean conquest of the 1st century of the modern era. It became a possession of the counts of Provence in the 10th century. In 1388 control passed to the House of Savoy who ultimately ceded it to France by the Treaty of Turin (1860).
The name is thought to come from Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, to commemorate the Massilian Greek victory over the local Celtic people.
