History[edit | edit source]
A trading post built in 1618 by Dutch settlers was the first European settlement in New Jersey although it was not permanent. In 1640, Swedish settlers purchased land from the Lenape people which became part of New Sweden. New Sweden was soon conquered by the Dutch, becoming part of New Netherlands, and remained under Dutch control until New Netherlands was conquered by the British in 1664. Delaware was one of the original 13 colonies of the United States.[1]
