French Colonization (1853-1946)[edit | edit source]

Under orders from Emperor Napoleon III, the French took formal possession on 24 September 1853. In 1946, New Caledonia became an overseas territory for the French. By 1953, French citizenship had been granted to all New Caledonians, regardless of ethnicity. [1]
