Macau (澳門) , sometimes also known as Macao, is officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (中華人民共和國澳門特別行政區). It covers an area of 115.3 km2 (44.5 sq mi). Macau is a former colony of the Portugese Empire, leased as a trading post from 1557 to 1999. It maintains separate governing and economic systems from mainland China under the principle of "one country, two systems". [1]
