The county was named after the Duchy of Brunswick-Lunenburg, which is located in modern-day Germany.

10,000 name petition (dated: 16 October 1776) signed by Baptists and Baptist sympathizers from all over Virginia, asking for an end to persecution of Baptists by the established church. A digitzed copy can be viewed at the Library of Congress website.
