  • The Spaniards arrived to the territory of the commune as of 1536. The Vilons began as a fishing cove, and eventually became a permanent settlement.
  • The city was declared a minor port in 1855.
  • The Vallenar earthquake of 1922 and the tsunami that accompanied it destroyed much of the commune.
  • The commune of Los Vilos has a population of approximately 18,500 people.[1].
