The County Seat is Bonifay and the county was created January 8, 1848. The County is located in the Northwest area of the state.[4]

1870 -- Courthouse burned and many records were damaged.
1902 -- The Westville Courthouse was burned in 1902, and most early county records perished with it.

Taxation[edit | edit source]

Taxes were levied on free white males over 21 and slaves aged 21 to 60. These persons are referred to as "polls." Tax listings, or digests, of a county generally list the taxable landowners and other polls and the amount of tax. The records for each county are divided by militia district.
