HEADERS[edit | edit source]

  • First topic we'll cover is headers.
  • These are the large printed words that head a section on a page.
  • You will notice a small edit box to the right edge of the page for each header created in Wikitext. Put your mouse over it and you will see the word "edit" appear.
  • Again, these are Wikitext headers, not HTML headers.

Header One

Header Two

Header Three

Header Four

Header Five
Header Six

USE OF HEADERS[edit | edit source]

  • Header One - are reserved only for titles of articles as you see in the title of this lesson. Please, don't use them in articles.

  • Header Two - size used most often for headers. Sometimes they will not wrap around images or tables.

  • Header Three and Header Four which are able to wrap around images and tables.

  • Header Five and Header Six are small and are rarely used, but they do have their uses.

HTML HEADERS[edit | edit source]

HTML headers are different from Wikitext headers.

  • They are constructed with header "tags".
  • Here is the "tag" we use to make header tags:

<h1>Header One</h1>
<h2>Header Two</h2>
<h3>Header Three</h3>
<h4>Header Four</h4>
<h5>Header Five</h5>
<h6>Header Six</h6>

  • NOTICE the <h1> header tags are used instead of equal signs =.

This is how the HTML headers show on a page in the Wiki:

Header One

Header Two

Header Three

Header Four

Header Five
Header Six
  • NOTICE there is NO little edit box off to the right of these headers.

HTML AND WIKITEXT[edit | edit source]

Below is how the HTML codes for headers compares with Wikitext.

HTML Wikitext

<h1> </h1>
<h2> </h2>
<h3> </h3>
<h4> </h4>
<h5> </h5>
<h6> </h6>

  • NOTICE the number following the "h" in HTML is equivalent to the number of equal signs in Wikitext.

WHY USE HTML FOR HEADERS[edit | edit source]

  • Main reason is to be able to add character to the header such as a different color of text or add a background color. We will show you how that is done in a later lesson. You cannot do that with Wikitext.
  • However, you lose the edit box and the ability to edit sections between headers. So you have to decided if it is more important to add character or keep the edit box.

TRY THESE OUT . . . . .[edit | edit source]

  • Using HTML header tags:
  1. Make a title header from the words: "Kentucky Genealogy”
  2. Make a Header Two from the words: "History”
  3. Make a Header Two from the words; "Vital Records”
  4. Make a Header three from the words: "Birth Certificates”
