Record Loss[edit | edit source]
1871-1919: The extinct James created in 1871 went bankrupt and was merged back into Hamilton county in 1919 along with its courthouse records. However, James County Courthouse fires in 1890 and 1913 caused extensive record loss. The surviving James County records are now housed in Hamilton County.[7]
For suggestions about research in places that suffered historic record losses, see:

Boundary Changes[edit | edit source]
Daughter county. The extinct daughter county called James has been re-attached to Hamilton County. James County was created in 1871 from parts of Bradley and Hamilton counties. James County went bankrupt in 1919. As a result it was reincorporated into Hamilton County. James County is now extinct.[10] For animated maps illustrating Tennessee county boundary changes, "Rotating Formation Tennessee County Boundary Maps" (1777-1985) may be viewed at the MapofUS.org website. |
