Freedom, located on Slate Creek where it joins the Salmon River, later became known as Slate Creek. At one time, there was a branch of the Salmon River Stores, which was owned and operated by John Nevin (1871-1917), an Irish immigrant who married Jennie Newman of White Bird, located upriver. All that is left of the location is a forest ranger station, homes, and in the hills above location, the remains of a cemetery.
