England Parish Tables

Project Leader[edit | edit source]

Becca Curtis

Purpose[edit | edit source]

To fix the outdated tables on each parish page in England. These tables contain many broken links, are missing important databases, or list databases that are not very useful in finding vital records in England. The first county we will be doing is Berkshire.

Task List[edit | edit source]

Task List

Instructions[edit | edit source]

Step 1[edit | edit source]

Find and delete the old table and replace it with new code.

Go to the parish page (links are on the Task List) and find the "Church records" heading. Underneath this heading there will be a line that says:

{{PAGENAME}} parish registers of christenings, marriages and burials are available online for the following years:

Underneath this line there should be an Online Parish Records table. Occasionally, some parish pages have two or no tables.

Option 1: If the page has one table:

1. Delete the code for that table. The code will have this structure:
{|
|-
|}

{|
|-
|}
2. Paste the following code in its place.

Option 2: If the page has two tables, the following code will be pasted onto the page twice.

  1. Delete the code for the first table on the page and paste the entire following code in its place.
  2. Delete the second table on the page and paste the second table in the code (not the entire code) in its place. The first table in the code only explains the abbreviations in the table so it only needs to be on the page once.
  3. In the table for the second parish on the page, change the {{PAGENAME}} in '''{{PAGENAME}} Online Parish Records''' to the actual name of the parish or else the two tables will be named the same thing.

See Abingdon St Helen, Berkshire for an example.

Option 3: If the page has no table, paste the following code under this statement beneath the "Church records" heading:

{{PAGENAME}} parish registers of christenings, marriages and burials are available online for the following years:
If the above statement is not found under the "Church records" heading, add it

Step 2[edit | edit source]

Find the IGI batch numbers and add it to the table.

1. Go to: www.archersoftware.co.uk/igi/fs-brk.htm.

2. Scroll down to the parish you are working on. (An example is shown below)

England parish tables instructions 1.png

3. Find the birth/christening and marriage IGI batches for the parish that will be added to the table under IGI. The batches will be added in this part of the code:

| bgcolor="#ffffcc" | '''IGI'''
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" |
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" |
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | <br>
Birth/Baptisms will be added in the first space and the Marriages will be added in the second space.

Take note:

  • Only add the IGI batch if the batch has over 50 entries.
  • The template for the IGI is: {{IGI|BATCH NUMBER|disp='''YEAR RANGE'''}}
  • If there is more than one batch for the Births/Baptisms or Marriages, add a comma between the links. Put the batches in chronological order (older batch first).
  • If there is no IGI for the parish, then delete the IGI section in the table.

Example: for the parish of Binfield (image shown above), two Births/Baptisms batches (C020371 and C020373) and three Marriages batches (M020371, M020373, and M020372) would be added. The code would look like this:

| bgcolor="#ffffcc" | '''IGI'''
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" | {{IGI|C020371 |disp='''1551-1812'''}}, {{IGI|C020373|disp='''1607-1835'''}}
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" | {{IGI|M020371|disp='''1538-1753'''}}, {{IGI|M020373|disp='''1612-1835'''}}, {{IGI|M020372|disp='''1754-1812'''}}
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | <br>

Step 3[edit | edit source]

Find the parish registers and bishop's transcripts links in the FamilySearch Catalog and add them to the table.

1. Go to the FamilySearch Catalog and search for the parish in Berkshire.

2. Click on the "Church records" heading to find all of the parish registers collections available for the parish. (An example is shown below)

Pic 2.png

3. Find the collection title that says: "Parish registers for PARISH, COLLECTION YEARS". Make sure that the Author is "Church of England. Parish Church of PARISH" and not a family history society or person.

4. Click on the link to go to the collection's page and copy the URL.

Copying URL English Parish Tables.png

This link to the parish register images collection will be added to the table under FS Catalog PRs. It will be added to this part of the code:

| bgcolor="#ffffcc" | '''FS Catalog PRs'''
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" |
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" |
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffff" |
The three spaces are the Images columns for Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials in the table.

5. Add the link for the FamilySearch Catalog parish registers collection to the three empty spaces. The link will look like: [URL '''COLLECTION YEARS''']

Take note:

  • If there is more than one collection, separate the links by a comma and put them in chronological order (older records first)
  • If there are no collections available for the parish, then delete the FS Catalog PRs section in the table

Example: for the parish of Binfield (image shown above), the parish registers collection is titled "Parish registers for Binfield, 1767-1910." This collection will be added to the table for Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials.

| bgcolor="#ffffcc" | '''FS Catalog PRs'''
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" | [https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/217914?availability=Family%20History%20Library '''1767-1910''']
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" | [https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/217914?availability=Family%20History%20Library '''1767-1910''']
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | [https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/217914?availability=Family%20History%20Library '''1767-1910''']

The same process will be repeated for the BTs.

1. Go to the FamilySearch Catalog and search for the parish in Berkshire.

2. Click on the "Church records" heading to find all of the bishop's transcript collections available for the parish.

3. Find the bishop's transcripts collection titled "Bishop's transcripts for PARISH, COLLECTION YEARS". Make sure that the Author is "Church of England. Parish Church of PARISH" and not a family history society or person.

4. Click on the link to go to the collection's page and copy the URL.

Copying URL English Parish Tables BTs.png

This link will be added to the table under FS Catalog BTs. The link to the bishop's transcript images collections will be added to this part of the code:

| bgcolor="#ffffcc" | '''FS Catalog BTs'''
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ffcccc" |
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffcc" |
| bgcolor="#ccffff" | <br>
| bgcolor="#ccffff" |
The three spaces are the Images columns for Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials in the table.

5. Add the link for the FamilySearch Catalog bishop's transcripts collection to the three empty spaces. The link will look like: [URL '''COLLECTION YEARS''']

Take note:

  • If there is more than one collection, separate the links by a comma and put them in chronological order (older records first)
  • If there are no collections available for the parish, then delete the FS Catalog BTs section in the table

Example: for the parish of Binfield (image shown above), the bishop's transcripts collection is titled "Bishop's transcripts for Binfield, 1607-1835." This collection will be added to the table for Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials.
