  • Dolores was founded in 1708, making it one of the oldest settlements in Petén.
  • Petén left as a dependent district of the department of Verapaz after the Indepedencia of Central America.
  • The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Pedro de Avcinena, had endeavored to maintain cordial relations with the British crown. However, in 1859 the threat of William Walker was presented again in Central America; In order to obtain the necessary weapons to face it, the Carrera regime had to cede the territory of Belize to the British Empire.
  • It was the treaty Wike-Aycinena in 1859 that delimited the border of Dolores with Belize.
  • The municipality of Dolores has a population of approximately 40,000 people[1]
