Background[edit | edit source]

In the 19th century, Chinese immigrants settled in Peru as contract laborers. Most of them were Cantonese, and they were mostly sent to work in the sugar plantations from 1849 to 1874. There were almost no women among these laborers, therefore, Peruvian women were married to them. [1]

Many of the contract laborers began to start own businesses after their contracts were served.
