According to archaeological evidence, Cabo Rojo has been inhabited since 30 BC and AD 120 by native people. The Spanish settled the area around 1511. Salt mining was an important industry by 1525. The town was founded on December 17, 1771 by Don Nicolas Alfonso Ramirez de Arellano y Martinez de Matos. Population 50,900. [1]
