History[edit | edit source]

Anasco was founded in 1733 and named after Don Luis de Anasco who was a colonist that came to Puerto Rico with Juan Ponce de Leon. Juan Ponce de Leon gave govenorship to Diego Colon who was the son of Christopher Columbus in the 1500s. Many of the settlers came from the Canary Islands and Spain. In 1918, the San Fermin earthquake destroyed Anasco's main church and most of the downtown structures including the town hall. Hurricane Maria caused more than 25 landslides per square mile because of the huge amounts of rain. Maria happened in 2017. The current population in 2010 was 29,261. [1]
